Rare Polished Stromatolite Fossil, Neoproterozoic (800 Million Years), Australia
DESCRIPTION : A rare specimen from an old collection: a thick polished block of stromatolitic chert from the Neoproterozoic (800 Million Years Old) Noondine Chert Formation in Western Australia. The Noondine Chert was originally a shallow marine limestone within which stromatolites grew prolifically, before later being silicified. This particular specimen displays closely spaced domal stromatolites - the stacked upward concave laminae visible in the close-up photos.
The reverse (unpolished) face displays the stromatolites even more clearly. In short, this is a rare and exquisite specimen from a lesser known formation, and an essential collector's piece for any stromatolite and deep time geology enthusiast!
SIZE : 170 mm x 155 mm x 45 mm (6.69 in x 6.10 in x 1.76 in). WEIGHT : 1494 g (3.29 lb).
